Anal fistulas are evaluated using X-ray fistulography, a crude diagnostic technique. These days, this method is becoming outdated due to advancements in radiology. X-ray fistulography is used in locations without access to sophisticated diagnostic equipment or they are used when very little information like presence of sinus or any other tract or bony involvement is required. It has been asserted that various diagnostic methods, such as CT, MRI, and endoanal ultrasonography, can provide precise information regarding the anatomical progression of an anal fistula. All of these instruments have, in fact, revolutionized the way that the condition is diagnosed. Because of their propensity to reoccur, anal fistulas, particularly complex ones, are a problem for surgeons. The primary cause of the recurrence is an incorrect fistula assessment.
The role of X-ray fistulography is fairly limited because it is interpreted in relation to the bony structures. This article reviews the advantages of the Modified X-ray Fistulography a.k.a Despande’s technique of fistulography over traditional fistulography, which is used at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India.
