Background: Menopause is a normal developmental stage in a woman’s life, marking the permanent cessation of menstruation. It is the result of irreversible changes in the hormonal and reproductive functions of the ovaries, which can result in drastic effects on quality of life (QOL) of women.
Aim: This study was to assess the incidence and frequency of oral symptoms in peri and postmenopausal women as well as to assess the level of awareness of menopause in women.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 peri menopausal and menopausal women attending the Oral Medicine Department of a D Y Patil dental hospital using a standardized menopause‑specific QOL (MENQOL) questionnaire consisting of physical, vasomotor, psychosocial, and sexual domains along with oral manifestations were used to collect the data.
Result: The major symptoms were reported in physical (57.95) followed by psychological (26.12), vasomotor (12.77), sexual (11.05) domain and for oral manifestations, it was 18.10. There was statistically significant association found between menopause and physical domain, oral manifestations.
Conclusion: There is a significant effect of menopausal symptoms on QOL of women and affects the oral cavity which emphasizes the need to create awareness among perimenopausal menopausal women regarding menopausal symptoms and management to improve their QOL.
