Effect Of Self Myofascial Release on Flexibility in Athletes: A Systematic Review. (2025). African Journal of Biomedical Research, 28(1S), 604-614. https://doi.org/10.53555/AJBR.v28i1S.6174

Abstract

Background: MFR is a manual therapy technique used widely to improve flexibility and delay DOMS. If performed by athletes or individuals on themselves is termed as self-myofascial release (SMFR). SMFR can be done using various tools like foam roller (FR), roller massager, lacrosse ball etc., foam roller being most commonly incorporated because of its easy understanding and application.

Objectives: This systematic review aims to assess the effect of self-myofascial release using foam roller on flexibility in athletic populations providing evidence-based recommendations for athletic training and performance optimization.

Data sources: PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were searched during 2014 to 2024 for studies containing words related to the topic of SMFR

Study Selection: Articles were selected based upon the use of the term self-myofascial release, flexibility and athlete in the title, abstract or key words. The final selection was made by applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria to the articles drawn.

Results: SMR using foam roller may significantly improve flexibility and range of motion in athletic population however the literature is limited and the isolated use of foam roller for self -myofascial release are less. It was found that self - myofascial release can be beneficial as an adjunct to other interventions

Conclusions: The current understanding suggests SMFR is a valuable tool for athletes to improve flexibility acutely. However, the effectiveness might vary depending on factors like the targeted muscle group, flexibility assessment methods, duration of self- myofascial release. Combining SMFR with other methods could be even more beneficial for athletes
