Abstract

Antibiotic resistance and microbial diseases are currently the two biggest problems endangering society's health. In this study, the reaction of 3-Pyridylcarbonylhydrazine with 2-acetyl-3H-benzo[f]chromen-3-one gave the new ligand; N'-(1-(3-oxo-3H-benzo[f]chromen-2-yl)ethylidene)nicotinohydrazide. The Co (II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) complexes have been accomplished with newly synthesized ligand. The structural characterization was achieved using magnetic data, molar conductance and elemental analysis, UV-visible, FT-IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectra to describe the ligand and the complexes. The FT-IR spectral data showed that this caused the ligand to bond with the metal ions in a tridentate way. The UV-visible spectral and magnetic data showed that the complexes exhibit octahedral geometry. The study of antimicrobial action showed that complex formation increased the free ligand activity. The Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes have the potential to be both an effective antifungal and a promising antibacterial agent.
