NITRIC OXIDE – THE MOTIVATOR OF THE BODY SYSTEMS

Abstract

Nitric Oxide is a wonder free radical molecule, a second 
messenger, an autocoid, a neurotransmitter and a paracrine, 
whose effects in the body systems have revolutionized the 
understanding of the mechanisms of these systems at 
biochemical and biophysical levels. While it contributes to the 
physiological status quo of these systems, it equally does 
contribute to the malfunctioning of the systems under certain 
conditions. Its nature, its discovery its mechanism of action and 
its effects on the smooth muscle, the renal, the gastrointestinal 
tract the respiratory, the nervous, the blood and the 
cardiovascular blood pressure buffering as well as the body 
temperature regulatory systems have been highlighted in this 
review.
